Meierei im Stadtpark
It was more an accident than a plan, bringing me to the restaurant Meierei im Stadtpark. Although I already had the Steirereck on my list, allegedly one of the best restaurants in Austria, at least if you follow the list of 50 Best Restaurants. However, wanted to cut a bit down on my food expenses this trip and relied on a foodblogger friend, who introduced me to the Meierei. In the end I liked it so much that I went twice, food is excellent, cheese anyway and prices moderate.
As already mentioned, the Meierei is linked to the Steirereck, also in the middle of the Stadtpark, just below. The interior is modern and bright, floor to ceiling windows with view into the park, a small terasse allows you to sit outside. Walls and tables in white as you would expect in a place that is called milk shop or dairy farm, which is the translation of the old German word Meierei. Everything looks a little more expensive than it is, but you should not hesitate to ask for a table. The service is friendly, easy-going and skilled.
The heart of the “milk shop” is a huge cheese tray just above the main restaurant and in front of a modern and white bar, which is decorated with plenty of milk bottles. But don´t be afraid – although different sorts of milk is offered, from fresh-milk to soy or rice-milk, you will find a good bottle of especially Austrian or Hungarian wines. This is one of the advantages being in the same building with the Steirereck. They have the same extensive wine list, and if you want, the young sommelier will come down and help you with the selection of grape-juices you might never have heard of, especially if you look for an Hungarian wine.
Once you studied the wine list, it´s time for food. We had the stuffed duckleg with fried asparagus and a sauce to die for. The next day I ordered a Wiener Schnitzel, that was perfectly made, very tender and almost too buttery for my taste. But perhaps my stomach was still suffering from the night out before. The Schnitzel came with a smooth potatoe salad for EUR 19,90. Other main courses are available from EUR 14,50 wich is not bad at all, for a fresh appel- or cream-strudel you will find EUR 3,50 only on your bill. The selection of courses is not extensive – as you would expect in a restaurant of that categorie – but anyone should find something between fish, beef tartar, baked brain and some Austrian classics.
Not sure I already mentioned that I love cheese and can hardly walk by a cheese-shop without entering… Therefore I had to skip the dessert at the Meierei im Stadtpark and studied the cheese-menu. And yes, they have a separate cheese-menu offering cheese tours through France, Austria and Europe or – and this is what I did – you make your own selection. You can do that with or without help from the cheese-sommelier, who could answer all my questions as regards some very rare looking dairy products.
The selection is extraordinary with over 120 (!) varieties or more depending on the season. So you could come every week without having to taste the same cheese twice. What a pity that I don´t live in this beautiful city.
Do it. The Meierei im Stadtpark is strongly recommended. A small but good selection of food moderately priced. Excellent wine list and spectacular cheese selection. Service is friendly and skilled, meals are served almost any time of the day: breakfast, lunch, teatime, dinner. Better make a reservation as this is a well known restaurant.
